Refrigerator Not Cooling

Milk tastes off. The freezer still makes ice, but the fridge side feels like a cool closet. In Atlanta humidity, a struggling refrigerator gives up fast. Before you call us, there are a few things worth knowing so the conversation moves quickly and you can tell us what you're actually seeing.

What "not cooling" usually means

A refrigerator doesn't make cold. It moves heat out. Air blows over a cold coil in the freezer, then a fan pushes some of that air into the fresh food section. So "the fridge is warm but the freezer is fine" points at airflow, not the sealed system. Both sides warm at once points at the compressor side or the defrost system. Ice cream soft and milk warm together is a different problem than a warm crisper drawer. Note which compartment fails first, and whether you hear a fan running when the door is shut. That detail narrows things a lot.

Cause family one: airflow and buildup

This is the cheapest and most common group. Condenser coils under or behind the unit collect dust, pet hair, and pollen. Around here, spring coats everything in yellow, and a clogged condenser can't dump heat. The compressor runs longer and cools less. Vents inside can also be blocked. A tall stack of containers against the back wall of the fridge stops the cold air path. Overloaded shelves after a grocery run do the same. Door gaskets matter too. If the seal is torn or sticky, humid room air leaks in all day and the unit never catches up.

Cause family two: defrost and fans

The evaporator coil frosts up on purpose, then a heater melts it on a cycle. When the defrost system quits, frost builds into a solid block. Air can't pass. The freezer may hold temperature for a while, but the fridge side warms first. Signs include a sheet of ice on the freezer's back panel, water pooling under the crisper, or a fan that suddenly sounds loud and rattling. A failed evaporator fan motor causes similar symptoms without the ice. Control boards and thermistors also sit in this group. They tell the fridge when to cool, and they can lie.

Cause family three: the sealed system

This is the compressor, condenser, and refrigerant loop. If the compressor won't start or a line is restricted, nothing gets cold anywhere. Clues include a unit that is silent and warm, or a compressor that hums then clicks off after a few seconds. Sometimes a start relay is the actual failure and the compressor is fine. Sealed system work needs recovery equipment and licensing. It is never a homeowner job, and it is never a guess. We diagnose it before recommending anything, because on older units the repair may not be the smart choice.

Safe checks you can do right now

Confirm power. Interior light on doesn't always mean the compressor has power, but a dead outlet is worth ruling out with a lamp. Check the temperature dials in case someone bumped them. Pull the unit out and vacuum the visible coils and grille at the bottom. Feel for warm air behind the fridge; if the space is tight against a wall, give it a few inches. Close the door on a dollar bill and tug. If it slides out easily, the gasket is weak. Clear food away from rear vents. Stop there. No panels, no wiring, no refrigerant lines. Call us with what you found.

What we do that's different

We take actual temperatures at the vents and inside both compartments, not just a thermometer reading on a shelf. We check the evaporator coil for frost patterns, test the defrost heater and thermistor, and measure amp draw on the compressor circuit. Control board inputs get verified instead of assumed. We also check whether the unit is short-cycling, which points to a different cause than one that never starts. Then we tell you what failed, what it takes to fix, and whether the age of the unit makes that reasonable. We cover metro Atlanta and neighboring states, so we plan the route and give you a window.

Refrigerator Not Cooling — quick answers

Freezer works but the fridge is warm. Why?

Usually airflow. Either the evaporator fan stopped, the coil is frosted solid, or the vent between compartments is blocked by food. The freezer sits closest to the cold source, so it hides the problem longest.

Should I unplug it and let it thaw?

Unplugging for a day can melt an ice blockage and restore cooling temporarily. That confirms a defrost problem but doesn't fix it. The frost returns in days or weeks. Move food to a cooler meanwhile.

How long before food is unsafe?

Refrigerated food is generally fine about four hours with the door closed. Above 40 degrees past that, discard perishables like meat, dairy, and leftovers. A full freezer holds longer, roughly a day or two.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the machine is doing: the noise, the smell, the error code. Brand and rough age help us load the right parts.

  2. Step 2

    We schedule a window

Metro Atlanta traffic is real, so we book arrival windows that hold up. You get a heads-up before the technician rolls out, and we work around your day where routes allow.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose, then repair

The technician tests the unit, finds the failed part, and explains what's wrong in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets replaced. Most common parts ride on the van.

Questions worth asking any repair company

Ask these of anyone you let into your home — us included. Call and we'll answer all five before you book anything.

  • 1Ask for their license numberThen verify it with your state licensing board rather than taking it on trust.
  • 2Ask for proof of insuranceLiability cover protects you if something goes wrong in your home.
  • 3Get the quote in writingIncluding the trip fee, whether it's credited against the repair, and parts.
  • 4Ask how they handle callbacksIf the same fault returns, what happens? Get the answer before work begins.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for Southern humidityDamp air punishes appliances. Dryers take longer, gaskets grow mildew, ice makers sweat and freeze up. We see these patterns weekly and check for them instead of chasing the obvious part first.
  • Pollen-season know-howSpring coats every condenser coil in yellow film. A fridge that struggles in April often just can't shed heat. We clean, test airflow, and tell you what actually failed versus what was choked.
  • Six states, one teamGeorgia and the states around it. Same intake, same diagnostic approach, same clear explanation whether you're inside the Perimeter or two hours out. One call reaches the whole service area.
  • All major brands, independentWe are not tied to any manufacturer. That means we service what's in your kitchen and laundry room regardless of badge, and we recommend repair or replacement based on the machine, not a brand relationship.
