Ice Maker Stopped Making Ice
The bin is empty. Again. You scooped the last cubes out two days ago and nothing has dropped since. Maybe you hear the arm cycle, maybe you hear nothing at all. In Atlanta homes, an ice maker that quits is usually one of four things, and a couple of them you can rule out yourself in ten minutes.

What an empty bin is actually telling you
An ice maker is a small machine with three needs: water, cold, and a signal to cycle. Lose any one and cubes stop. The pattern matters. No ice at all, with dry cube molds, points at water supply. Hollow or shrunken cubes point at low water pressure or a partly frozen line. Full molds that never eject point at the harvest cycle or the mold heater. Ice that forms but tastes stale and clumps together usually means the unit is cycling fine and the freezer is running warm. Note which of those you have before you touch anything. It cuts the guesswork in half.
Start with the cheap stuff: switches, arms, and the door
Every ice maker has an off position. A wire arm that got bumped up, or a paddle switch someone flipped during a cleanout, will stop production cold with nothing broken. Check it first. Next, the freezer door. If it sits open a half inch because a bin or a bag of frozen okra is blocking it, humid Atlanta air pours in and frost builds where it shouldn't. Also look at the bin itself. Cubes that fused into one block can hold the feeler arm up permanently, and the unit reads that as full. Dump the block, wash the bin, wait a day.
Water supply and the filter
No water in, no ice out. The saddle valve or shutoff behind the fridge can get knocked partly closed when someone cleans back there. Check the dispenser: if water comes out slow or not at all, you have a supply problem, not an ice maker problem. A clogged water filter is the common one. Filters load up with sediment and choke flow enough to make hollow cubes before they stop things entirely. Replace it on schedule. If your fridge was recently pulled out for floors or paint, the copper or plastic line may be kinked behind it. Pull gently and look.
Temperature and the pollen-season condenser
Ice makers need the freezer near zero degrees. Warmer than that and the harvest cycle stalls. Put a thermometer in a glass of water in the freezer overnight and read it. Running warm? Look under and behind the fridge. Metro Atlanta homes take on serious pollen in spring, and it mats onto the condenser coils with pet hair and dust. A blanketed coil can't shed heat, so the compressor runs long and the freezer drifts up. Unplug the fridge, vacuum the coils and the grille, plug it back in. Give it 24 hours before you judge.
Where a technician goes that you shouldn't
Past the safe checks, the work moves behind panels. We meter the inlet valve for coil resistance and confirm it's actually opening when the control calls for water. We check the fill tube for a hidden ice plug and thaw it properly instead of chipping at it. We test the thermostat and mold heater, read the control board, and verify the defrost system, because a failed defrost heater frosts an evaporator until airflow to the freezer dies. Those checks involve live voltage and refrigerant-side components. If your fridge is under manufacturer coverage, call that in first. Otherwise reach us and describe the pattern you noted.
Ice Maker Stopped Making Ice — quick answers
How long after a reset should I wait for ice?
Give it 24 hours. A healthy ice maker makes a batch every couple of hours once the freezer is at temperature, but a unit that was warm or dry needs a full cycle or two to catch up.
Can a new water filter cause no ice?
Yes. A filter seated wrong or left with air in the line will stop or slow flow. Reseat it, then run two or three gallons through the dispenser to purge the air before judging.
Is it worth repairing an ice maker on an older fridge?
Often, if the rest of the unit runs well and holds temperature. We look at the failed part, the age of the sealed system, and how the fridge is performing overall, then give you the picture.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the machine is doing: the noise, the smell, the error code. Brand and rough age help us load the right parts.
- Step 2
We schedule a window
Metro Atlanta traffic is real, so we book arrival windows that hold up. You get a heads-up before the technician rolls out, and we work around your day where routes allow.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
The technician tests the unit, finds the failed part, and explains what's wrong in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets replaced. Most common parts ride on the van.

Questions worth asking any repair company
Ask these of anyone you let into your home — us included. Call and we'll answer all five before you book anything.
- 1Ask for their license numberThen verify it with your state licensing board rather than taking it on trust.
- 2Ask for proof of insuranceLiability cover protects you if something goes wrong in your home.

Why homeowners call us
- Built for Southern humidityDamp air punishes appliances. Dryers take longer, gaskets grow mildew, ice makers sweat and freeze up. We see these patterns weekly and check for them instead of chasing the obvious part first.
- Pollen-season know-howSpring coats every condenser coil in yellow film. A fridge that struggles in April often just can't shed heat. We clean, test airflow, and tell you what actually failed versus what was choked.
- Six states, one teamGeorgia and the states around it. Same intake, same diagnostic approach, same clear explanation whether you're inside the Perimeter or two hours out. One call reaches the whole service area.
