What mineral buildup actually does inside the machine
Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium behind every time water heats or evaporates. In a dishwasher, that scale coats the heating element and clogs the tiny spray arm holes, so dishes stop getting clean. In a washer, it stiffens fabric and builds up in the valve screens, which slows the fill. In an ice maker, scale narrows the water line until cubes come out hollow or half-size. Water heaters collect a mineral layer on the bottom, so the burner or element runs longer for the same hot water. None of this trips a fault code. The machine just gets weaker and noisier until a part quits.
The habit that prevents most of it
Run a descaling cycle. That's it. Use a citric acid dishwasher cleaner or plain white vinegar in a bowl on the top rack, then run the hottest cycle empty. For the washer, use a washing machine cleaner tablet on a tub-clean or hot cycle. While you're there, pull the dishwasher's lower spray arm off by hand if it twists free and rinse the holes under the faucet. Wipe the door gasket, and check the filter basket at the bottom for grit. All of this is tool-free and takes fifteen minutes. If your home has a softener, keep salt in it.
How often, realistically
Descale the dishwasher and washer every month or two. Atlanta's humidity keeps gaskets damp, so monthly wiping helps with odor at the same time. Refrigerator water filters get changed every six months, sooner if flow slows or the ice tastes off. Water heater flushing is once a year, and if you've never done it, have someone who does it regularly handle the first one. Then there's pollen season. Your fridge and any outdoor condenser coil pull in yellow dust that mats onto the fins. Vacuum the front grille and any reachable coil in spring and again in fall.
Signs prevention time has passed
White film on glasses that won't wipe off, plus grit inside the dishwasher tub, means scale is already on the element. A dishwasher that runs long and leaves dishes cool has a heater insulated by mineral. Popping or rumbling from the water heater is sediment boiling underneath. Ice cubes that shrink week by week, or a fridge dispenser that trickles, points to a restricted line or valve. A washer that takes forever to fill usually has plugged inlet screens. Will a water softener fix appliances that are already scaled up?
