Dishwasher Repair or Replace
Whether a broken dishwasher is worth repairing comes down to its age, what actually failed, and whether the part is still made. Call us with the symptom and we'll tell you which way we'd lean. Standing water in the bottom, gritty dishes, a cycle that stops halfway: those are all common, and most of them are small repairs. The ones that aren't, we'll say so.

Age is the first filter, not the last word
Most dishwashers run somewhere around ten years in a normal Atlanta household. Hard water and heavy loads shorten that. A machine under seven years old with one bad part is usually worth fixing. Past twelve years we start looking harder at the whole picture, because the pump, the motor, and the door seal are all aging together. Age alone doesn't decide it. We've replaced a drain pump in a fifteen-year-old unit that ran fine for years after, and we've seen four-year-old machines with a cracked tub, which ends the conversation fast.
What broke matters more than how old it is
Failures fall into two piles. Small pile: drain pump, door latch, inlet valve, float switch, heating element, control board, spray arm. Those are common, contained, and usually straightforward to swap. Big pile: a leaking or cracked plastic tub, a rusted-out frame, a wash motor seal that's been dripping into the base for months. Water damage under the unit is the one that changes our answer most often. If the sump has been weeping, the insulation is soaked and the base is corroded, you're not fixing one part. You're chasing a machine that's already coming apart.
Parts availability quietly decides a lot of jobs
Manufacturers stop making control boards and specialty pumps for older models. Sometimes a part is technically listed but backordered for weeks. That matters when you're washing dishes by hand in a house with kids. We check part numbers before we commit to anything, and we tell you straight if the piece is scarce or discontinued. Common brands with common failures usually mean same-week parts. Odd European models, integrated panel-ready units, and discontinued lines can be slower. Panel-ready dishwashers are their own case, since the custom cabinet front often makes replacement a bigger project than the repair.
How we think it through on the visit
We start with what you saw. Standing water? Burning smell? Did it trip mid-cycle or never start at all? Then we run a diagnostic, pull codes if the board stores them, check the drain path, and test the inlet valve and the door switch. We look under the unit for old water stains and rust. After that we lay it out plainly: this is what failed, this is the part, this is how long it takes, and here's the condition of everything else. If we think you'd be throwing effort at a machine near the end, we say so. Then it's your call.
When we tell you to replace it
A cracked tub ends it. So does a rusted base with soft metal, or several systems failing at once in a machine over a decade old, or a discontinued control board with no source. Repeated leaks that have already damaged the subfloor put you in the same spot. In those cases repair is a patch. Replacement also makes sense if the unit was builder-grade, has never cleaned well, and you've been annoyed with it for years. A new pump doesn't fix a bad design. We'd rather tell you that than take on a job you'll regret. Call us and describe the symptom. We'll tell you what we think before anyone drives out.
Dishwasher Repair or Replace — fast answers
My dishwasher won't drain. Is that a big repair?
Usually not. It's often a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. Clear the standing water and check the filter basket yourself first. If it still won't drain, the pump is the common culprit.
Is a control board failure worth fixing?
Depends on age and part availability. On a newer machine, yes. On an older one where the board is discontinued or backordered, that's often the point where replacement makes more sense. We check the part number first.
How long should a dishwasher last in Georgia?
Roughly a decade for most homes. Hard water, heavy daily loads, and skipped filter cleaning shorten it. Rinse off large food chunks and clean the filter monthly, and you'll add real time to the machine's life.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the machine is doing: the noise, the smell, the error code. Brand and rough age help us load the right parts.
- Step 2
We schedule a window
Metro Atlanta traffic is real, so we book arrival windows that hold up. You get a heads-up before the technician rolls out, and we work around your day where routes allow.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
The technician tests the unit, finds the failed part, and explains what's wrong in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets replaced. Most common parts ride on the van.
