Built-In Microwave Repairs

Your built-in microwave quit heating. Or the door latch sticks. Or the turntable spins but dinner comes out cold. Now you're standing in the kitchen wondering if this is a repair call or a demolition project. Built-ins aren't like countertop units — they're framed into cabinetry, trimmed to fit, and swapping one can mean carpentry. Here's how we sort it out.

Age matters, but not the way you think

A built-in that's five or six years old is usually worth fixing. Past ten, we get more careful. The question isn't just years — it's whether the unit was a heavy-duty model or a builder-grade filler. Cabinet cutouts also age poorly. Older openings often don't match current sizes, so replacement drags in trim work, filler kits, or a cabinet maker. That changes the math fast. We'd rather repair a decade-old unit that fits its hole perfectly than start a remodel over a bad door switch. Tell us the model number when you call us. It tells us a lot before we ever load the van.

The fault tells the story

Some failures are routine. Door switches, latches, control panels, cooling fans, turntable motors, and burned wiring connections are common and fixable. A unit that runs but won't heat often points to a single component, and we test that safely with the power off and the unit discharged. Other faults are heavier. A failed transformer plus scorched wiring plus a cracked cavity liner adds up. Rust burned through the cavity floor or arcing that pitted the interior walls means the box itself is compromised. Sparking inside is a stop-now symptom — unplug it or kill the breaker and let us look before you use it again.

Whether parts still exist

Parts availability decides more calls than anything else. Control boards for discontinued models go scarce, and some manufacturers stop stocking them entirely. Generic parts don't exist for proprietary boards. When we can source the part, repair usually makes sense. When it's backordered with no date, we say so plainly rather than let your kitchen sit dead for weeks. Trim kits are their own headache. Atlanta metro homes span decades of kitchen styles, and matching a discontinued trim to your cabinet opening is sometimes harder than finding the electronics. We check part status during the visit and give you a straight answer.

What we actually do on the visit

We start with your description, then run the unit if it's safe to. We check door alignment and latch action, look for scorching or arc marks in the cavity, listen to the fan and magnetron cycle, and read fault codes where the control offers them. Over-the-range models get a vent path check too — grease-clogged filters and blocked ducts cook the electronics. Humidity here is rough on control boards, so we inspect connections for corrosion. Then we tell you the fault, whether the part is available, and how long it takes. You decide from there. No pressure either direction.

When replacing is the honest answer

Sometimes we recommend swapping. A cavity with rust holes or arc damage can't be made safe. Multiple major failures at once on an older unit rarely ends well. A discontinued board with no supply chain is a dead end, and stringing you along helps nobody. Units that took water damage from an upstairs leak are usually finished. We'll also flag it if a repair would only buy a few months given the unit's overall condition. When that's the case, we say it, note the cutout dimensions you'll need for shopping, and step out of the way. Call us and we'll take a look.

Built-In Microwave Repairs — quick answers

My microwave runs but food stays cold. Is that fixable?

Often yes. That symptom usually points to a specific heating component or a door switch, not the whole unit. We test it safely with power off. If the part is available, it's a straightforward repair.

Can I keep using a microwave that sparked inside?

No. Stop using it and unplug it or shut off the breaker. Sparking means arcing, which can pit the cavity walls or damage the waveguide cover. Have it inspected before it runs again.

Do I have to replace the cabinet if the microwave is replaced?

Not always, but it's a real risk. Cutout sizes changed over the years, so a new unit may need a filler or trim kit. We measure your opening and tell you what you're dealing with.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the machine is doing: the noise, the smell, the error code. Brand and rough age help us load the right parts.

  2. Step 2

    We schedule a window

Metro Atlanta traffic is real, so we book arrival windows that hold up. You get a heads-up before the technician rolls out, and we work around your day where routes allow.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose, then repair

The technician tests the unit, finds the failed part, and explains what's wrong in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets replaced. Most common parts ride on the van.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for Southern humidityDamp air punishes appliances. Dryers take longer, gaskets grow mildew, ice makers sweat and freeze up. We see these patterns weekly and check for them instead of chasing the obvious part first.
