Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven
If you smell gas near your range or oven, turn every knob off, open windows, and get everyone out of the kitchen. If the smell is strong or comes back, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. That smell is not something to wait out. Here is the order to work through, and who to call at which point.

Do these things first, in this order
1. Stop what you're doing. Don't finish cooking. 2. Check the knobs. A bumped burner knob that clicked but never lit is a common cause. Turn every knob fully off. 3. Open windows and exterior doors so air moves through the room. 4. Get people and pets out of the kitchen. 5. If the smell is faint and clears within a minute or two once the knobs are off, keep the windows open and watch it. 6. If the smell is strong, keeps coming back, or you're unsure at all, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. [Check the knobs first. It costs nothing and it solves a lot of these calls.]
What not to do
Don't flip light switches on or off. Don't unplug anything or plug anything in, since a small spark at the outlet is enough. Don't run the range hood fan to clear the air. Don't light a candle, a match, or a lighter to "check." Don't call from a landline inside the house. Use a cell phone from outside. Don't open the oven or pull the range out from the wall. Don't go looking for the leak yourself with soap, a lighter, or a sniff test at the connection. And don't assume it's fine because it faded. Gas pools low and out of sight.
When to leave the house
Leave now if the smell is strong, if you hear hissing near the range, if anyone feels dizzy or nauseated or has a headache, or if the smell is in more than one room. Take everyone and the pets. Walk out the door. Don't stop to shut off gas at the meter, and don't hunt for the main valve. Go to a neighbor's or stand in the street. From there, call your gas utility's emergency line. They come out for this at any hour and will check the line and the meter. Wait outside until they say the house is clear. In that moment, that's the whole job.
Cutting power or gas, only if it's safe
There's one shutoff a homeowner can reasonably use. That's the small valve behind or beside the range where the flex line connects, if you can reach it without moving the appliance and the smell is mild. Quarter turn, handle crosswise to the pipe, done. If it's stiff, hidden, or you'd have to drag the range across the floor, skip it. Leave the meter alone. Utility techs use a wrench and a specific procedure there. On power: don't touch the breaker panel while you can still smell gas in the house. Air the place out, then let the utility clear it.
Who to call: the utility or us
Call the gas utility first, always. They handle the supply line, the meter, and anything past the wall. That call is what makes the house safe. Call us after they've been out and cleared the line, when the problem points back to the appliance itself. That's a burner that won't light and keeps ticking, a pilot that won't hold, a smell only when the oven runs, an igniter that glows but never catches, or a valve that seeps. We work on gas ranges and ovens across metro Atlanta and the surrounding states, independently, on all major brands. Reach us and tell us what the utility found. Drive times out here run long, so the sooner we know, the better we can slot you.
Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven — fast answers
Why does my oven smell like gas only when I first turn it on?
A short whiff during ignition can be normal while gas reaches the igniter. If it lasts more than a few seconds, or you smell it while the oven runs, stop using it and have the igniter and valve checked.
Is that rotten-egg smell actually the gas?
Natural gas has no odor on its own. Utilities add a sulfur compound so leaks can be smelled. If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur near the range, treat it as gas until the utility says otherwise.
Can I use the rest of my kitchen after the utility clears the line?
Usually yes, if they've tagged only the range or oven as the problem. Keep that one appliance off until it's repaired, and follow whatever the utility technician wrote on the tag they leave behind.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the machine is doing: the noise, the smell, the error code. Brand and rough age help us load the right parts.
- Step 2
We schedule a window
Metro Atlanta traffic is real, so we book arrival windows that hold up. You get a heads-up before the technician rolls out, and we work around your day where routes allow.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
The technician tests the unit, finds the failed part, and explains what's wrong in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets replaced. Most common parts ride on the van.

Why homeowners call us
- Built for Southern humidityDamp air punishes appliances. Dryers take longer, gaskets grow mildew, ice makers sweat and freeze up. We see these patterns weekly, so we check for them instead of chasing the obvious part first.
- Pollen-season know-howSpring coats every condenser coil in yellow film. A fridge that struggles in April often just can't shed heat. We clean it, test airflow, and tell you what actually failed versus what was choked.
- Six states, one teamGeorgia and the states around it. Same intake and same diagnostic approach whether you're inside the Perimeter or two hours out, with the same clear explanation at the end. One call reaches the whole service area.
- All major brands, independentWe are not tied to any manufacturer. We service what's in your kitchen and laundry room regardless of badge, and any repair-or-replace recommendation comes from the machine itself, not a brand relationship.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Whirlpool, Samsung, GE, LG, Maytag, Bosch and more.
